Cuba and Cigars | The Sorting House

From the curing barns in big bundles made with yagua and called packs the leaves pass to the sorting house, workshop that can be in the fields or in the towns.

Here the leaves should suffer the following process: preselection, gentle loosening , moistening, airing, rest, selection, picadero (where the different grades are placed), bunching, bundling, baling, control of plagues and storage, according to the destination of the harvested tobacco: for wrapper, binder or filler.

The packs in the sorting house are stored according to the classification already done by peasants in the curing barn for their sale to the merchant, that is to say type of leaf: - mañanita, libre de pie, uno y medio, centro fino, centro gordo and corona.

The sorting house where tobacco for wrappers is selected has good conditions and highly qualified personnel. It is necessary to keep in mind that the delicate leaves that are used for the making of cigars should be graded without mechanical damages, this tobacco is taken from the curing barn to the sorting house in special boxes of cardboard, when tobacco has not received artificial fermentation it is moved after the loosening process and the pylons are made in the sorting houses
