Casa Ernesto Rabasa Toledo
Address: Reina 313 el Lealtad y Campanario
City: Centro Havana
Tel: +53 7 8627247, +53 7 8621166

My review: This casa was recommended to us by the owner of Casa Meyvis as she had to bump us for another reservation as we did not confirm early enough. We arrived later at nightand had some problems finding it as the street La Reina is now called Simon Bolivar. Ernesto met us on the street to greet us. Once we were inside, we found the accommodations to be very pleasant. The ceilings are 20 ft high, and the rooms are quite spacious. Ernesto has 2-3 rooms to offer and one with an extra bed, with a shared bathroom, however entrance to the bathroom is through a private corridor rather than a main hallway.
Perfect location in Centro Havana, only blocks away from the Paseo del Prado. We easily walked to Havana Vieja.

Casa specifics: Quiet, Fantastic hosts, Comfortable, Colonial, Cozy, Hidden gem, Roomy, Charming, Safe
Amenities: Private entrance, Airconditioning, Breakfast service, Queensize bed, Extra bed available, Bathroom with shower
How was your room?: Spacious, clean and comfortable.
How was the food they offer?: Ernesto makes a great breakfast omelette!
Other services they offer: Ernesto is happy to show you to the private parkade a few blocks away, where you can leave your car to be watched for $1 CUC per day.
Other comments: Although Ernesto does not speak English, we managed to communicate with my butchered Spanish - he's a very pleasant guy!

Address: Belascoian #452 Piso 10, apto 7
La Habana
Tel: (537) 870-3954 Cel: (535) 295-4907

My review: I had a great stay at this family run Casa.
Nena and her son Daniel really incorporated me into their family. Although I had the air-conditioned room...we spent a lot of time together...in the living areas.
The apartment is simply decorated, but my room, with its King-Sized bed, AC and private bath with a hot shower were very comfortable. I had a balcony with incredible views of almost all of Havana...really beautiful sunsets, and I could see El Morro and hear the nightly Canonazo. The best part of this house are the meals from the kitchen of Daniel, which were extraordinary. He is a wonderful cook, and made me many different meals, all typical Cuban. (He told me when Lobster or Fish were available, and I helped him purchase those special things for the whole family.)
He is also a great Cocktail Barrista. We had Daquiris almost every day.
Daniel's girlfriend is a dancer and dance instructor, and she and Daniel took me to some great places to hear traitional music and dance.

I would really recommend El Mirador to anyone seeking a Real Cuban experience.

Casa specifics: Quiet, Fantastic hosts, Comfortable, Hidden gem, Roomy, No frills, Safe
Amenities: TV, Airconditioning, Private bathroom, Laundry service, Balcony, Breakfast service, Dinner service, Kingsize bed, Bathroom with shower
How was the food they offer?: I had many wonderful meals, prepared by Daniel or his mother.
Arroz con Pollo (Chicken and Rice) Lobster Stew, Fried Fish, Fried Platanos, many kinds of beans with Rice.
Other services they offer: Daniel is a great Bartender...makes Great Cocktails. I bought the Rum and other ingredients, and he did not charge extra to make the cocktails.
Other comments: Daniel's Mother Nena is a Christian, and was happy to show me her church and introduce me to her friends.

Casa de Renta Rolando
Address: San Rafael 754 1er piso e/Marques Gonzalez y Oquendo,
City: Habana Centro
Tel: 879-7944 y 05 292 3074 (celular)

My review: Rolando gave us an incredibly helpful and efficient introduction to Habana and to Cuba - with maps, information about safety and how to behave, information about Cuba as a whole. We got there when it was dark and he was waiting down in the street for our taxi from the airport to arrive - very helpful and reassuring when you first arrive in a foreign city. The sitting room at the casa is elegant, faded colonialism and there's a balcony overlooking the street which is amazing for people watching. We had an ensuite bedroom with a double bed and an old air conditioner. The room had no windows. Rolando's mother looked after us and made a good breakfast.

Casa specifics: Fantastic hosts, Colonial, Safe
Amenities: Airconditioning, Private bathroom, Balcony, Ceiling fan, Breakfast service, Bathroom with shower
How was your room?: The room was a bit shabby but adequate for our needs. It had no windows.
How was the food they offer?: The breakfast was excellent with the best coffee we had in Cuba.
Other services they offer: Rolando has a second casa particular in Habana Centro. I didn't see it.
Other comments: Rolando is a charming man who speaks fluent English and is a fund of information. The location of the casa is particularly interesting, being in the heart of Habana Centro, well away from the tourist area. It was a good place to spend our first couple of nights in Cuba and to get a feel for the real Habana. We loved the street and we were made very welcome by Rolando and his mother.

Casa Ever y Mary
Address:
Ave. Malecon #115 piso No.2. Apart. No. 3
e/Genios y Crespo, Centro Havana
Havana
Tel: (0537) 8671572

My review: CASA EVER y MARY.
On recommendation, we stayed with the extremely friendly and helpful Mary & Ever at their casa on the Malecon in May 2011. We called and were lucky to get a room for 3 nights, and again on return to Havana for 4 nights. Located on the 2nd floor, the apartment has a spectacular seaview balcony where you can enjoy breakfast for an additional 4CUC, and also sumptuous dinner, if required, for between 10-15CUC. If we return to Cuba we will definitely stay here again, as we landed on our feet with its fantastic location.
About 10 minute walk to the Old town, it has a great restaurant two doors away called No. 10, a yellow building; Close to the better of the two Casa de la Musica; And just a block away to the Deauville hotel, where you can eat buffet breakfast for 5CUC, access internet, cadeca currency exchange office, and Cubanacan travel company for bus & accommodation onward journies. Everything is easily accessible.
There are two front doors together. Dont knock as it accesses stairs only. Enter the left hand door. At the top of the stairs youll see the painted sign outside the door with their names on it. While their English was limited, they are presently learning the language. We had no Spanish, and still managed to communicate very well.
Many of the Malecon buildings are dilapidated. This one has been renovated outside aswell as within. The casa has two bedrooms, both ensuite, with hot water showers. One has a window overlooking the sea with two fans. Airconditioning was being added during our stay. The other room is to the back of the house with airconditioner and no window. We stayed in this one. The whole apartment is spotlessly clean and rooms are cleaned each day. We also got clothes washed for a few CUC extra. They are honest people. We felt very safe leaving our cash and passports in the room.
On writing this, June 2011, the apartment was being painted again when our friend went there.

Casa specifics: Fantastic hosts, Comfortable, Hidden gem, Safe, Children in the house
Amenities: TV, Airconditioning, Private bathroom, Laundry service, Balcony, Ceiling fan, Breakfast service, Dinner service, Extra bed available, Bathroom with shower
How was your room?: Cleaned each day and tidy.
How was the food they offer?: Food was excellent and big portions
Other services they offer: Laundry. Will phone ahead to book recommended casa for you in other towns.

Review

Not yet on the Cuba Junky website but our booking had been mixed up at Casa Jose Aguilar and he arranged this for us.
Elaine and Leah are wonderful caring people. This is a fantastic Casa with great views. It is very central, (so busy and noisy) but the welcome and the place really make up for it. We had a great laugh with Elaine mixing up her small amount of English and my small amount of Spanish

How was your room?: Lovely and big. Very high ceilings. Great view.
How was the food they offer?: Only had breakfast, but that was very good
Other services they offer: Made telephone calls for us. Came out into the street to hail us a taxi and negotiate a price on our behalf to the Viazul (much cheaper than the previous ones we had negotiated ourselves).
Other comments: Felt we had made a lovely new friend.

Casa El Lirio
Address:
Ave. 321 Esq. 172, No. 32101
Rpto. Lutgardita Boyeros
Havana (near Jose Marti Airport)
Tel: 683-4515

El Lirio is an elegant home that was built 80 years ago. The green room where we stayed, with spacious private bathroom, was the most beautiful of any casa weve been in Cuba. It has its own private entrance off a gated patio full of exotic plants including blooming orchids. The sumptuously furnished room had a TV, fridge, and air conditioning. There was lots of hot water in the shower, a big bar of glycerine soap, and even a bidet! The rest of the house is furnished in grand style and stuffed with antiques. The neighbourhood is quiet and pleasant for strolling.

The cost was 30 CUCs because a 5 CUC commission is paid to the woman at the information kiosk who recommended it at the airport. Future visits would cost only 25 CUCs. We had a delicious bean soup plus salad for dinner (no meat, so it was only 8 CUCs for both of us) and two breakfasts for 6 CUCs.

Raul and Yadira are a lovely couple who warmly welcomed us, quickly prepared our dinner, stuck around for a bit of conversation, pre-ordered the next days taxi, then left us to relax. Raul, a former journalist, speaks excellent English. His wife Yadira speaks only Spanish. They have two teenaged daughters who kept to themselves.

Compared to the 25 CUCs it would have cost for a taxi trip to Vedado or downtown Havana, it was 10 CUCs from the airport to El Lirio and another 10 CUCs to return. Still quite expensive for a trip that took only a few minutes, but it was well worth it. Highly recommended!

Proprietors: Raul and Yadira

Casa specifics: Quiet, Fantastic hosts, Elegant, Comfortable, Colonial, Hidden gem, Roomy, Romantic, Charming, Beautiful, Safe, Garden, Patio
Amenities: TV, Private entrance, Airconditioning, Private bathroom, Breakfast service, Dinner service, Bathroom with tub, Bathroom with shower, Private parking
Other comments: Sorry that we only have a few photos of plants in the elegant patio garden garden.

Casa of Ihovanna and Gerardo
Address:
Calle San Jose San Martin #202, 10mo Piso (10th floor), Apto 1003
e/ Amistad y Aguila
Havana (Centro)
Tel: 863-6005

Ihovanna and Gerardo rent two rooms in their tenth floor apartment, which has commanding views of the Capitolio building (see photo) and Central Havana all the way to the sea. Each of the bedrooms has a private bathroom and access to a shared kitchen, dining room, living room and balcony that are in a separate wing from the living space of the owners. The space is well furnished and spotlessly maintained by a mother-daughter duo that do daily cleaning.

Ihovanna and Gerardo are friendly and welcoming hosts who enjoy inviting special guests to participate in their family activities. It was our good fortune to spend a couple weeks at their casa so we got to know them, their family and friends. We were invited to and participated in a Christmas Eve dinner that featured the traditional whole baked pig with all the trimmings.

During our stay, Ihovanna made referrals to other casas, helped us make travel arrangements, provided problem-solving support, and safeguarded our luggage while we went off to Viñales for a week-long stay in the country. Her recommendation of casas in Viñales and Baracoa were both excellent. Rates fall to only 20 CUCs for repeat customersa deal for this excellent location, only a couple blocks from the main hotels and attractions in central Havana. Ihovanna and Gerardo speak only Spanish but with sign language and charm, Ihovanna makes herself understood.

Casa specifics: Quiet, Fantastic hosts, Comfortable, Hidden gem, Safe
Amenities: TV, Airconditioning, Private bathroom, Balcony, Breakfast service, Dinner service, Bathroom with shower

Casa Mary y Ever
Address:
115 Malecon
e/ Genio y Crespo; Piso 2, Apt 3
Havana
Tel: 0537-867-1572

After staying a night in a terrible casa in Old Havana, we moved to Ever and Mary's house on the Malecon. Beautifully renovated, the apartment is up 2 flights of narrow and steep stairs. There are 2 rooms for rent. I didn't see the back room that does not have a view, but stayed in the front room - highly recommended! We spent hours on the balcony watching the Malecon and sea and were served our breakfast out there too! Ever is friendly and helpful (helped us make dinner reservations) and Mary cooks well and was kind. Their daughter was so sweet, showing me her school books - I think our Spanish was at about the same level. The spiral staircase up to the private bathroom was a bit scary at times - I wouldn't want to climb down the stairs if I were very tall, drunk, or at all d! isabled. There are always taxis outside and it's a beautiful walk along the Malecon to the Hotel Nacional and an easy walk into Havana Vieja and el Capitolio.

Casa specifics: Beautiful, Children in the house
Amenities: Private bathroom, Balcony, Breakfast service, Dinner service, Bathroom with shower
How was your room?: Small but nice with a beautiful view of the seawall, lighthouse, and water. Private "ensuite" bathroom up a tight spiral staircase. No toilet seat. Warm, not hot, shower.
How was the food they offer?: Great breakfast; didn't have dinner as the lobster we were offered for dinner wasn't available.
Other comments: Unbeatable view and balcony, but you better be in good shape to climb all those stairs!

Luis was a great host. When i arrived (late at night) He took me round showed me where the shops were for water, told me cheap places to eat, and generally gave me my bearings (bank etc). The apartment itself was nice and clean with a Tv in the main room.
The bedroom with ensuite had a lock on the door and a balcony. i was given keys for the main building the apartment and my room. Luis was working niteshift, so i didnt see him much. He was very relaxed and only had a few rules, Which were purely for my safety, and he gave me aheadsup on what scams to watch out for which i appricated. He also set with up with my next Casa in Trinidad. His english was pretty good, and we managed to get by with that and my very little spanish.

Casa specifics: Quiet, Fantastic hosts, Comfortable
Amenities: Private bathroom, Balcony, Bathroom with shower
How was your room?: Clean and tidy, consisted of double bed, small wardrobe, chair and ensuite with my own shower.
How was the food they offer?: No food was on offer, but Luis did show me some local places where i could eat very cheaply.
